The Legion of Honor, also known as the National Order of the Legion of Honor (in French: Ordre National de la Légion d'honneur), is the highest French distinction for military and civil merits, established on May 19th, 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte. The merits required to award this important distinction include a flawless performance of one’s area as well as performing more than it is expected, showing devotion, creativity and being a contributive agent to the development and welfare of others. In the words of the General Charles De Gaulle, the Legion of Honor is “…a community of elite living.”
